Alkaline Reflux Gastritis Following Gastric Surgery


Abstract
The material in this report is based on 20 case reports of alkaline reflux gastritis patients who were treated in the Department of Surgery of Korea University Hospital during 2 years from July 1977 to August 1982.
1) Alkaline reflux gastritis was produced by reflux of the bile salts into the stomach after gastric surgery.
2) The sex ratio of male to female was 2.3: 1.
The highest frequency age group was 51 to 60 with 10 cases(50%).
3) The cardinal symptoms and signs were epigastric pain in 18 cases(90%), billions vomiting in 12 cases(60%) and weight loss in 6 cases(30%).
4) Comparison of endoscopic findings with symptoms showed typical group in only 5 cases (25%), of which 3 cases(15%) were typical symptom with diffuse gastritis and 2 cases(10%) were atypical symptom with diffuse gastritis. Intermediate group was typical symptom with perianastomotic gastritis in 8 cases(40%). Atypical group. was atypical symptom with perianastomotic gastritis in 7 cases(35%).
5) All 20 patients were managed with diet control, antacids and cholestyramine among which 12 were managed with the diet control and antacids and 8 with cholesty ramine. The medical management was satisfactory in 12 cases(60%). 6) Roux-en-Y diversion was tried in one case with satisfactory surgical procedure.
